The principal city of Cilicia (southern Anatolia), birthplace and ancestral home of Saul, who later became the apostle Paul. Acts records Saul's escape to Tarsus after his early persecution of believers, and Barnabas later traveled there to recruit him for ministry at Antioch. The city was a center of Greek culture and learning.
