The ancient land of Babylon in Mesopotamia, where Nimrod built his kingdom and where humans built the Tower of Babel in rebellion against God. Shinar represents the original seat of worldly power and pride that God's judgment dispersed. Later, when Nebuchadnezzar conquered Jerusalem, exiles were brought to Shinar, making it a place of both ancient judgment and present captivity.
