A place name that appears in Joshua's conquest narrative as a landmark near Jericho and again in 1 Samuel during Saul's battles with the Philistines. Beth-aven served as a geographic reference point, located on the high country east of Bethel. Hosea uses the name mockingly to refer to Bethel itself, the religious center of Israel's idolatry, calling it the House of Emptiness instead of the House of God.

Hear its story sung

"The Philistines assembled themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the seashore in multitude. They came up and encamped in Michmash, eastward of Beth Aven."
