The eldest son of Levi, Gershon became the patriarch of a major Levitical division second only to Kohath in prominence. The Gershonites were entrusted with the care of the tabernacle's curtains, coverings, and furnishings outside the sanctuary proper. They maintained their cultic and musical responsibilities throughout Israel's history and the return from exile.
