A priest and scribe sent by the Persian king Artaxerxes to restore the law of Moses in Judah, Ezra led a second wave of Jewish exiles back to Jerusalem. Though later than Zerubbabel, Ezra spearheaded religious reformation and the rebuilding of the community's commitment to God's word. His careful genealogies and records preserved the identity of the returning people.
