Ephron the Hittite was a landowner at Mamre who sold Abraham the cave of Machpelah as a burial place for Sarah. Though Abraham asked a gift, Ephron insisted on payment, and Abraham paid four hundred shekels of silver for the field and cave. This transaction established Abraham's ownership of a permanent resting place in Canaan.
