Belshazzar was the son and regent of Nabonidus, ruling Babylon when God judged the empire through the mysterious handwriting on the wall. During his feast, he saw God's judgment pronounced on the city: "Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin." That very night, Babylon fell to the Medes and Persians, ending the neo-Babylonian empire.
